During my time in the VAPA department at UCCS, I have had the distinct pleasure of being the Class Manager for the UCCS Lion's Roar Brass. My good friend Rebecca Himberger started this ensemble in the fall of 2020 and has since had many people filter through its ranks, but I was the one she entrusted with the monumental task of running the ensemble. While the learning curve was steep, I accepted this challenge with open arms and in return I have been blessed with amazing friends and a chance to hone my skills as a composer, arranger, conductor, and euphoniumist. Each semester we gather a selection of student compositions, original arrangements of contemporary music, and works from the canon of classical music; and we practice these pieces top to bottom in preparation of forming a stellar performance showcasing the talent of 5 (or 6 (or even7!)) UCCS brass musicians. Serving the Lion's Roar Brass and growing as an artist and a leader in return illustrates just one of the many opportunities I’ve had to cultivate my craft in the VAPA department at UCCS. - Jadon Cruzan, Current UCCS Student, Class of 2025
